POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for directing the planning, implementation and evaluation of programming related to literacy education for students.

 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists the Principal and Curriculum Coordinator in the development of the program model to be utilized in the planning, development and evaluation of literacy in the school.
  • Develops and coordinates processes and procedures which will ensure the articulation of literacy programming where possible and/or appropriate.
  • Coordinates the development and utilization of learner outcomes and assessment procedures in the literacy program.
  • Assists in the evaluation of the curricular program and materials, and makes appropriate recommendations concerning their use.
  • Works with building administrators and department/grade level heads to coordinate the work of building instructional teams.
  • Works with and provides input to special program personnel (technology, library-media, SPED, ESL, etc.) on issues related to literacy education.
  • Interprets, along with building personnel, the literacy program to staff, parents, community and Board of Directors.
  • Participates in grade level and/or faculty meetings at the building level to assist with data analysis, intervention strategies, and strategic planning for literacy instruction.
  • Assists with the organization and management of building level literacy material.
  • Maintains knowledge of current educational issues.
  • Serves as a resource and provides support for staff who perform as content leaders.
  • Conducts demonstration teaching to model literacy instruction.
  • Promotes increased parental involvement in building literacy program.
  • Serves as a liaison to building administrators responsible for the operation of the co-curricular program.
  • Assists others in the design and development of programs serving students outside the normal school structure.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.

 Education/Experience:  Master’s degree or higher.  

 

 Certification:  Valid Teaching Certificate- Reading Specialist K-12   

 

                Language Skills:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional  journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.  Ability to write reports, business  correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of mangers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

                Mathematical Skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest,  commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

                Reasoning Ability:  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

                Other Skills and Abilities:  Must be able to transport between school buildings, districts and cities.  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.       Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.  Ability to       utilize technology in establishing appropriate record keeping program for students, programs, and staff.
